The Life of Marriage: Shepherding Relationships through ...

All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Life is full of disappointment. Why is it we always feel disappointed with our partner, friends, family, and sometimes, our life? According to the dictionary the word ?disappoint? means ?to fail to fulfill the expectations or wishes of.

From childhood we are always conditioned to sate others? whims, our parents?, teachers?, family members? or peers?. How many times do we hear the proud young mother blathering on the comparison between her child and another about achievements in potty training skills, talking, reading or swimming skills, among other accrued jealousies?

As we mature, not only do we have a certain perspective of our capabilities and sense of achievement, but we also begin to set standards, as it were, amongst ourselves, too. This is great when the encouragement registers optimism sourced from one?s passion and confidence. After all, a healthy competition is stimulating ? especially when we feel we have a fighting chance to succeed. But what happens when we lack confidence, and we do things constantly to please others with a sense of duty rather than pleasure or joy? What happens when we don?t live up to expectations? What happens when no matter how hard we try, we cannot achieve that ?acceptable level?? What happens when we suffer setback after setback and there?s nothing we can do to work it out? Who sets the standards, though, that we accept and try to live up to?

In this situation disappointment emerges as a problem, failure begets problem. Sometimes people don?t know how to handle their problems. Others ended up doing drugs, drinking alcohol, they think drugs and alcohol will solve their problem instead of a painted solution in the mind. Everyone experiences a problem in life. Sometimes such a problem can get in the way of achieving your goals and enjoying your life. At times like these it can be helpful to talk to a counselor. Counseling in Los Angeles provides free and confidential personal counseling for people who seek professional psychological help and advice. Addiction in Los Angeles is not a problem anymore because there are lots of counselors out there who are willing to help them be freed from addiction. Also they have anger management in Los Angeles.

Generally, people seek counseling because they need help to solve an issue or problem. There are many reasons why people seek counseling, and no matter the reason is, for most people, it takes a lot of courage to make the first step. After this stage, it requires you to commit yourself to the process of counseling. For this reason, it is vital that you find a therapist whom you can trust and work with.

'American Taliban': Let me pray with others in prison

Alexandria County Sheriff's Dept. / AP file

John Walker Lindh is seen in a file photo originally released by the Alexandria County Sheriff's Department in Alexandria, Va. The photo was made on Jan. 23, 2002.

By NBC News staff and wires

Updated at 3:30 p.m. ET: American-born Taliban fighter John Walker Lindh testified Monday that the U.S. government is forcing him to sin by denying him the right to pray daily with other Muslims in the highly restricted federal prison unit where he is detained.

He made his comments during the first day of a closely watched trial that will examine how far prison officials can go to ensure security in the age of terrorism.

Lindh was captured in Afghanistan and imprisoned in the United States after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks on the United States by Islamic extremists.

Lindh testified in federal court in Indianapolis that the Terre Haute, Ind., prison where he's serving a 20-year sentence for aiding Afghanistan's Taliban government before its overthrow allows prisoners to eat, talk, play cards and exercise together, but bans daily group prayer. He contends this violates a 1993 law barring the government from curtailing inmates' religious expression without showing it has a compelling interest.

Lindh, 31, adheres to a school of Islam that requires group prayer five times a day, if possible.?

"I believe it's obligatory," Lindh said. "If you're required to do it in congregation and you don't, then that's a sin."?

Attorneys for the government maintain that Lindh's own behavior since he was placed in the unit in 2007 proves the risks of allowing group prayer.

The government says in court documents that Lindh delivered a "radical, all-Arabic sermon" to other Muslim prisoners in February that was in keeping with techniques in a manual seized from al-Qaida members that details how terrorists should conduct themselves when they are imprisoned.

Lindh's sermon proves "that religious activities led by Muslim inmates are being used as a vehicle for radicalization and violence in the CMU," the government claims.

The prison warden halted daily group prayers in 2009 and allowed them only on the holy day of Friday.

Lindh accuses the government of going too far in its drive for security and trampling on his freedom of religion by restricting group prayers among Muslim inmates.

A cluster of U.S. marshals surrounded a shackled Lindh as he was brought into the courtroom on Monday morning. He?was wearing an olive green prison uniform and a white prayer cap. He smiled at his mother, who was sitting in the third row of the courtroom gallery.

The bearded Lindh was led out after two hours of testimony.

With the help of a glossary for court officials, Lindh guided the court through a series of lessons on Muslim prayer traditions.?

Lindh?has been held in the federal unit at?Terre Haute since 2007.??He was charged with supporting terrorists after his capture by U.S. troops in Afghanistan and later pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Muslims are required to pray five times a day, and the Hanbali school to which Lindh belongs requires group prayer if it is possible. But inmates in the Communications Management Unit are allowed to pray together only once a week, except during Ramadan. At other times, they must pray in their individual?cells. Lindh claims that doesn't meet the Quran's requirements and is inappropriate because he is forced to kneel in close proximity to his toilet.

Thomas Farr, a former diplomat who now teaches at Georgetown University and studies religion and terrorism, said common sense suggests that the prison's need for security would outweigh Lindh's religious rights.

"The foremost responsibility of prison officials, as de facto proxies for the American people, is to prevent Mr. Lindh from obtaining any capacity to plan or carry out attacks on them," he wrote in an email. "That is why he is in prison, and if that is not a compelling state interest, I do not know what is."

Watch the most-viewed videos on NBCNews.com

The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, which is representing Lindh, contends the policy violates a federal law barring the government from restricting religious activities without showing a compelling need.

"This is an open unit where prisoners are basically out all day," said ACLU legal director Ken Falk, who noted that inmates are allowed to play basketball and board games, watch television and converse as long as they speak English so the guards can understand. "They can do basically any peaceful activity except praying," he said. "It makes no sense to say this is one activity we're going to prohibit in the name of security."

Falk said Lindh's speech wasn't radical and was given during the weekly prayer that inmates are permitted. He said Lindh was not disciplined for the speech.

The self-contained unit in which Lindh resides has 43 inmates, 24 of whom are Muslim. Inmates are under open and covert audio and video surveillance, and except for talks with their attorney, all of their phone calls are monitored. Prisoners are not allowed to touch their family members when they come for their tightly limited visits. They must speak English at all times except when reciting ritual prayers in Arabic.

Without such tight security, the government claims, the prisoners would be able to conspire with outsiders to commit terrorist or criminal acts.

Joe Hogsett, the U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana, said he believes decisions about prison regulations are best made by prison officials, "not by convicted terrorists and other dangerous criminals who reside there."

"Mr. Lindh is allowed to pray in his cell; he's allowed to pray wherever he happens to be as many times every day as his religion suggests to him that he should," Hogsett said. "Where the rules must draw the line is, how often must prison officials allow prisoners to congregate together?"

According to court documents, daily prayers were allowed from the time the unit opened in 2006 until May 2007, when Muslim inmates refused to stop in the middle of a prayer to return to their cells during a fire emergency.

The lawsuit was originally filed in 2009 by two Muslim inmates in the unit. Lindh joined the lawsuit in 2010, and the case has drawn far more attention since then. The other plaintiffs have dropped out as they were released from prison or transferred to other units.

Lindh had been charged with conspiring to kill Americans and support terrorists, but those charges were dropped in a plea agreement. He is serving a 20-year sentence for supplying services to the now-defunct Taliban government of Afghanistan and carrying explosives for them. He is eligible for release in 2019.?

What to watch for at the GOP convention on Monday

Here are some things to watch for at the GOP convention Monday:

1. WHEN THE RAINS CAME: Hurricane Isaac rolls toward the GOP convention in Tampa, Fla., threatening a thicket of wet, windy disarray depending on how and where it hits. The storm is on course to pass west of the convention city.

2. WAIT 'TIL TUESDAY: Republicans announce a leaner convention schedule to begin Tuesday ? after canceling all events Monday except for a symbolic, 10-minute opening because of the approaching storm. How will a town full of eager delegates spend the day now?

3. NO BIDEN: Florida does without the nation's current vice president on Monday. Joe Biden scrapped a campaign swing through the state on account of the storm.

4. LOGISTICAL RESHUFFLINGS: Even with no formal convention events, lots of GOP luncheons and engagements are scheduled ? and some are being relocated to accommodate possible inclement weather. Among the displaced happenings: a breakfast with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and a brunch with former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and House Speaker John Boehner.

5. AND AN EXTRA DAY OF ANTICIPATION: Convention delayed will not be convention denied, say some enthusiastic participants. "We're ready to blow the roofs off on Tuesday night," says Mitch Zak, media director for California's GOP delegation.

First identification of a strong oral carcinogen in smokeless tobacco

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Scientists today reported identification of the first substance in smokeless tobacco that is a strong oral carcinogen ? a health risk for the 9 million users of chewing tobacco, snuff and related products in the U.S. ? and called upon the federal government to regulate or ban the substance.

The researchers reported at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society in Philadelphia on August 22.

"This is the first example of a strong oral cavity carcinogen that's in smokeless tobacco," said Stephen Hecht, Ph.D., who led the study. "Our results are very important in regard to the growing use of smokeless tobacco in the world, especially among younger people who think it is a safer form of tobacco than cigarettes. We now have the identity of the only known strong oral carcinogen in these products."

Evidence has been accumulating for years that people who use smokeless tobacco have an increased risk of cancer of the mouth, esophagus and pancreas. Scientists also knew that smokeless tobacco users are exposed to a variety of carcinogens and experience some damage to their genetic material impairing its normal function. But until now, no substance in these products was clearly implicated as a cause of mouth cancer, explained Hecht, who is at the University of Minnesota.

Hecht's team identified the culprit as (S)-NNN, one of a family of hundreds of compounds called nitrosamines, most of which are carcinogenic, capable of causing cancer. Nitrosamines occur in a variety of foods, ranging from beer to bacon, and also form naturally in the stomach when people eat foods containing high levels of nitrite. But nitrosamine levels in smokeless tobacco are far higher than in food.

To do it, they gave laboratory rats a low dose of two forms of NNN, suspected carcinogens in smokeless tobacco, for 17 months in doses roughly equivalent to a person consuming half of a tin of smokeless tobacco every day for 30 years. One substance, (S)-NNN, induced large numbers of oral and esophageal tumors in the rats.

"The most popular brands of smokeless tobacco that are sold in the U.S. have unacceptably high levels of this particular carcinogen," explained Hecht. "And smokeless tobacco is a known cause of oral cancer. Obviously, we need to decrease the levels of this material in all smokeless tobacco products -- or eliminate it altogether." Hecht adds that removing (S)-NNN from these products is feasible. In fact, some products on store shelves today have reduced levels of the carcinogen.

Hecht explained that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has the authority to regulate tobacco products, but no regulations on the levels of specific carcinogens exist yet. "My suggestion is that levels of (S)-NNN in smokeless tobacco be decreased to below 10 parts per billion. That would make it more consistent with the levels of nitrosamines in food products," he said. (S)-NNN also is in cigarettes and other smoked tobacco items, and he suggested that the substance be regulated in these products, as well.

The researchers acknowledged funding from the National Cancer Institute.

Acer Aspire V5 review an 11inch Ivy Bridge laptop for $550

Acer first took the wraps off its Aspire V5 series at CeBIT in March, teasing the line of notebooks with designs that are 30 percent thinner than other laptops in their category. A few months later, in June, the company officially unveiled the 14- and 15-inch Aspire V5s, with Ivy Bridge processors and prices starting at $630. Rounding out that family is the 11-inch the Aspire V5 171. We have a bit of an identity crisis on our hands with this guy: though it looks like a netbook and weighs a light three pounds, it packs a Core i5 Ivy Bridge processor befitting a full-fledged machine, but it costs a budget-minded $550 ($500 with Acer's current promotion). Many products in this price range are clunky 15-inchers, so where exactly does this Aspire V5 fit in? Join us past the break as we sort that out.

For Danish homeowners, refinancing is bliss | Real Estate | South ...

Is it time to phase out Fannie and Freddie?

Is it time to phase out Fannie and Freddie?

Jack Guttentag
Inman News?

Editor's note: This is the third in a three-part series. See Part 1 and Part 2.

The first two articles in this series indicated that there was no quick way to replace Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac without seriously disrupting the market. An expansion of portfolio lending by depository lenders cannot fill the void, and revival of the private secondary market that collapsed during the crisis is neither feasible nor desirable.

The best available option is a slow fix where existing mortgage banks and perhaps other firms converted to Danish-style mortgage banks, with temporary assistance from Fannie and Freddie. This would create a robust secondary market in which mortgage banks retain full liability for every security they issue -- as opposed to the fair-weather market we had before in which the firms issuing securities took their money from investors and washed their hands of further involvement.

This article considers the favorable features of the Danish-style secondary market for mortgage borrowers.

Direct linkage between the primary and secondary markets

In the U.S. system, the primary market where loans are made to borrowers is separated by time and process from the secondary market where the loans are eventually funded permanently. For example, a loan closed by a small ("correspondent") lender is sold to a larger wholesale lender who sells it to an investment bank who places it in a new mortgage security. Months may pass between the date when the loan is closed and the date when the loan becomes collateral for a security.

In the Danish model, in contrast, there are no transfers of ownership, because each individual borrower is funded directly by the secondary market. The mortgage bank sells the mortgage directly to investors simply by adding it to an open bond issue covering the same type of mortgage. If the new loan is a 5 percent, 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM), for example, it is added to the outstanding bond secured by 5 percent, 30-year FRMs.

Reflecting these differences in the relationship between primary and secondary markets, borrowers in the U.S. face far more challenges in shopping for mortgages than borrowers in Denmark.

Borrowers in the U.S. don't have access to secondary market prices, and if they did, it would do them no good because there would be no way to use it. They are on their own in dealing with loan originators, many of which use a variety of tricks of the trade to extract as much from them as possible.

In Denmark, borrowers can price their loan by accessing secondary market prices online. They enter the type of mortgage they want and the interest rate, and find the corresponding bond selling for the highest price. The prices of all Danish mortgage bonds are shown on the NASDAQ website, www.nasdaqomxnordic.com/bonds/denmark. (Alternatively, they can go to a broker or loan officer who is paid by the lender selected, who has access to the same bond data with consumer-friendly add-ons.) The borrower pays the bond price plus a 0.5 percent rate add-on by the lending bank, plus some out-of-pocket fees that are set competitively.

Refinancing options

When market interest rates drop, borrowers in both the U.S. and Denmark can refinance at par to lower their interest rate. When market interest rates rise, however, only borrowers in Denmark can refinance at the lower market price. Borrowers in the U.S. must pay off their old loan at par.

For example, Doe has a $200,000 balance on his 5 percent mortgage, and he expects to sell his house for $250,000 in a market in which homebuyers pay 5 percent. But before he can sell, market rates jump from 5 percent to 7.5 percent, and potential buyers can now afford to pay only $200,000, wiping out Doe's home equity.

However, because of the rate increase, the market price of Doe's 5 percent mortgage has dropped from 100 to 85. If Doe is a Dane, before selling his home, he can refinance into a 7.5 percent loan by paying $170,000 to retire his old loan; by so doing, he retains three-fifths of his equity. If Doe is from the U.S., his entire equity is wiped out.

Given the already substantial depletion of home equity in the U.S., the need to reduce the further losses that will occur when interest rates begin their inevitable ascent is compelling.

Estate Planning in Hartford and Westport, CT

Aug 13, 2012 ?/? By: Barry D. Horowitz, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Estate Planning

If you are married and comfortable with your spouse assuming ownership of any property that you share together you may feel as though estate planning is not necessary for you.

In reality, taking this approach is a mistake because there are a lot of details to take into consideration, especially if you are concerned about the eventualities of aging in addition to the simple transfer of assets.

The above having been stated, there are indeed certain protections that are built-in when you are legally married with regard to asset transfers and medical decision-making. People who are in long-term committed relationships who are not married in the eyes of the law do not enjoy these safeguards.

When you think about domestic partnerships same-sex unions often come to mind, and it is indeed important for gay couples to execute the appropriate estate planning documents even if they are legally married at the present time.

But there are others who choose to live together without getting married for their own reasons. These individuals must also record their wishes in a legally binding manner because they have no status under the accepted rules of intestate succession.

Many people don?t know where to begin when they consider the subject of estate planning, and this is understandable. If you are ready to devise a plan for the well-being of those that you love, simply take action right now and get in touch with a licensed and experienced Hartford estate planning attorney set up an informative consultation.

Look For Fixed Rate ISAs And Aid Your Finances - The Finance ...

Tax havens were once the distinctive domain from the moneyed handful of; the average investor had nor enough time, the income, nor the actual solicitors necessary to disguise cash from the tax man. In 1999 the government attempted to decrease this inequity simply by making the Individual Savings Account ISA.

ISAs were of two kinds, the stocks and shares ISA along with the cash ISA. The actual stocks and shares ISA allowed the small investor to put his after-tax revenue into funds along with other small investors and buy equity shares; the gains were not taxed. Of course some funds invested more prudently than others. A few lost money. For the majority of,however cash ISAs were safer.

The cash ISA, such as the stocks and shares ISA, had been formed from after-tax income and also the gathering interest was tax free. In bank financial savings accounts the cash ISA could be certain to give a profit. After all, for almost all purposes, money ISAs and regular bank savings accounts managed virtually the same way; the individual?s cash stayed at the bank and wouldn?t go negative (unless you counted for inflation, obviously).

Currently the Bank of England rate for personal savings deposits is at or around a half per cent. Despite the actual tax savings, ordinary cash ISAs cannot depend on much more than that. The good news is for the small investor there is the?fixed rate ISAs. These ISAs are savings bonds sold at a assured fixed rate of interest for a certain time period. In contrast to the regular cash ISA, the deposit cannot be added to during that period; however, while initial acquisitions of the cost savings bonds tend to be limited by the total amount allowed for cash ISAs, or ?5,340, that amount can be combined with the individual?s additional ISAs to purchase more savings bonds.

These?fixed rate ISAs, or savings bonds, can be simply obtained online. A number of bank websites market them. Several online sites offer listings exhibiting the many banks and their cited interest rates. At present, those rates are as high as 4% for conditions lasting three or four years. However be careful here. Almost all is not as it seems. Some of these prices are misleading. Be mindful the ?limited-period bonus?. That 4% the bank claims for four years might be just 4% for the very first year and 2% for the three leftover, hence browse the prospectus meticulously.

Tax free Individual Savings Accounts certainly are a great means for the small investor to protect their money from taxes. There are a number of different kinds of ISAs, but the safest would be the?fixed rate ISAs. These cost savings bonds tie the money down for extended durations, but they pay off higher rates. The modest investor may need to look carefully at these rates just before purchasing the savings bonds; the ?limited-period bonus? may result in.

Oops: Ryan is ?next president of the United States??

Perhaps channeling the fervent wishes of conservatives, Mitt Romney on Saturday introduced running mate Paul Ryan as "the next president of the United States." UPDATE: This may actually be a very, very good omen for the Republican ticket.

"I would like you to join me in welcoming the next president of the United States, Paul Ryan!" Romney told a fired-up crowd in Norfolk, Virginia.

As Ryan took the stage to cheers and flag-waving, and settled in behind the podium for the biggest speech of his political life, Romney came back to make things right.

"Every now and then I'm known to make a mistake," he said, to huge laughs from the supportive audience. "I did not make a mistake with this guy. But I can tell you this, he's going to be the next vice president of the United States."

So why is this minor but very high-profile flub good news for the Romney-Ryan ticket? Because, four years ago, here is what Barack Obama said: "So let me introduce to you the next?president-the next vice president of the US of America, Joe Biden."

Biden, not to be outdone, referred to his future boss as "Barack America."

After unrest, divisions grip Anaheim, Disneyland's home

ANAHEIM, California (Reuters) - Civil unrest over fatal police shootings of two Hispanic men has divided the normally placid city best known as the home of Disneyland and renewed calls by Anaheim's growing Latino community for a greater say in local government.

The City Council this week voted 3-2 to reject a proposed ballot measure to end Anaheim's at-large voting system and have council members elected from specific districts, a change that supporters say would have given Hispanics more of a voice in the city of more than 335,000.

The three council members who opposed putting the proposal on the November ballot said they wanted more time to study alternatives to the at-large system.

Latinos make up nearly 53 percent of Anaheim's population, up from less than 47 percent in 2000, U.S. census figures showed. But only three Latinos have ever been elected to the City Council, according to the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

The five-person City Council in Anaheim, the largest California city still electing its leaders on an at-large basis, is mostly made up of whites, but one member of the panel is originally from India and another claims Hispanic heritage as the daughter of a man from Spain.

The Orange County tourism hub made headlines last month when violent protests erupted following two fatal weekend police shootings of Hispanic men, one of whom was unarmed, leading to dozens of arrests and smashed storefront windows.

"I think there's a feeling of many people that there's not one Anaheim, and maybe a sense of not belonging and a feeling that they don't own their government, and none of that's good," Mayor Tom Tait told Reuters in a phone interview.

It was Tait who introduced the defeated proposal to have Anaheim voters decide in November whether to adopt a council district system. Such a system could potentially create at least one majority-Latino district, the ACLU said.

The ACLU sued Anaheim in June over its election system on behalf of three Latino plaintiffs, claiming at-large districts violate the state Voting Rights Act by denying Hispanics an opportunity to elect representatives of their choice.

It remains unclear whether the controversy over municipal elections was a factor in last month's civil disturbances. But recent unrest in Anaheim exposed a divide between the city's wealthier, mostly white Anaheim Hills neighborhood in the east, home to all but one City Council member, and predominantly Latino areas to the west known as the flatlands.

In the mostly Latino west and central Anaheim, about 60 percent of residents had household incomes of $50,000 or less, according to a study from Orange County Communities Organized for Responsible Development (OCCORD). In Anaheim Hills, 75 percent of people had household incomes of $50,000 or above.

West Anaheim has fewer than five parks per 50,000 residents, as compared with more than 11 parks for the same number of people in Anaheim Hills, OCCORD said.

And a 2009 OCCORD survey of 524 families in three of Anaheim's mainly Latino neighborhoods near Disneyland found 40 percent of families reported incomes of $25,000 or less.

    SPARK FOR UNREST

It was in the working-class, largely Latino neighborhood of Anna Drive that on July 21 a police officer shot and killed Manuel Diaz, 25, after a foot chase. Police say Diaz, a suspected gang member, was unarmed.

The next day, officers shot and killed Joel Acevedo, 21, after he opened fire on them while being chased, police said.

Two nights later, residents and activists gathered at City Hall to protest the police shootings in a demonstration that devolved into clashes with police when protesters threw chairs through windows of a Starbucks coffee shop and damaged about 20 other businesses.

It was the most violent of several protests to hit Anaheim in recent weeks.

The shootings that led to those demonstrations occurred as law enforcement data shows a recent spike in the use of deadly force by Anaheim police. The city's officers have opened fire in the line of duty seven times so far in 2012, compared with only four officer-involved shootings in all of last year and one in 2010, police said. Five people have died from police shootings this year alone.

Police say their increased use of firearms coincides with officers facing more armed gang members in recent months.

FBI statistics show the number of violent crimes in Anaheim rose to 1,281 in 2011 from 1,161 the year before, while murders more than doubled to 15. At the same time, the number of violent crimes reported to police across the United States fell by 4 percent in 2011, according to the FBI.

On Friday, more than 100 federal agents and local police officers fanned out across Orange County to target an Anaheim street gang. Forty-nine people face criminal charges following the crackdown, federal officials said.

At a City Council meeting on Wednesday, some residents took to the microphone to complain that in certain Anaheim neighborhoods people are not doing enough to stop crime by cooperating with police or keeping their children out of gangs.

But a larger share of speakers at the meeting, which took place among shouting matches and heckling, called for district-based council elections. Many of those arguing for the change were Latino, and some addressed the council in Spanish.

"Having district elections will really open the door to so many communities that have been shut down by the city of Anaheim," said resident Marisol Ramirez, 20.

Sports Physiotherapy Perth for Dancers: Evaluating Length/Tension ...

Sports Physiotherapy Perth is the preferred?treating method for injuries that are common among athletes and dancers. A series of tests and evaluations precedes the treatment process.? The length/tension muscle relationship test evaluates? the patient?s balance between strength and flexibility. If the patient is a frequently injured female dancer, there?s a good chance that she has the flexibility to bend over backwards, but lacks the strength to pull herself back to an upright position.

    ?

    ?Mostability?

    ?

The renowned sports coach Vern Gambetta wrote an enlightening article titled ?Too Much, Too Loose?. Here are his words of wisdom:

    ?

?Much of this controversy has arisen because the cult of flexibility that would lead us to believe that our athletes must become contortionists in order to prevent injuries and perform athletic movements.?

    ?

The same words apply to dancers,? who are athletes as well as performers.? While flexibility is defined as the range of motion available at each joint, Gambetta argues that we must transcend this definition when we speak about flexibility as applied to sport performance. He redefines flexibility as being the largest dynamic range of motion that can be controlled, and uses the word ?Mostability, ?? a term coined by sports medicine expert Gary Grey, to describe this concept.

    ?

?Mostability is the ability to functionally take advantage of just the right amount of motion at just the right joint in just the right plane in just the right direction at just the right time.?

    ?

    ?

    Hypermobility and Performance

Consider this: After any type of static stretch your body is incapable of performing with top agility or maximal speed. This is because your muscles become less responsive to stimulation. When your muscles are less responsive to stimulation, there is less feedback to the nervous system. As a result, your coordination is compromised. Static stretches also reduce the force production of your muscles, which essentially makes them weaker. These statements have been backed by a considerable amount of research. Here are the highlights of some of the studies:

    ?

    • Three 15-second stretches of the hamstrings, quadriceps, and calf muscles reduced the peak vertical velocity of a vertical jump in the majority of subjects. Knudson, D., K. Bennet, R. Corn, D. Leick, and C. Smith. 2000. Acute Effects of Stretching Are Not Evident in the Kinematics of the Vertical Jump. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport vol. 71, no. 1 (Supplement), p. A-30.
    • Maximal force in knee flexion declined on the average by 7.3% and in knee extension by 8.1% after static stretching even though 10?15 minutes passed between stretching and the strength test. Knudson, D., K. Bennet, R. Corn, D. Leick, and C. Smith. 2000. Acute Effects of Stretching Are Not Evident in the Kinematics of the Vertical Jump. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport vol. 71, no. 1 (Supplement), p. A-30.
    • In a study published in the August 2000 issue of ?Physician and Sports Medicine? authors Dr Ian Shrier and Kav Grossal found that stretching, as part of a warm-up, did not reduce the susceptibility to injury. These researchers found that ?only warm-up is likely to prevent injury,? by which they mean a series of dynamic stretches, or flexibility in motion exercises.? The researchers argues? that? if injury prevention is a primary objective of a warm-up routine, then athletes should ?drop the stretching before exercise and increase warm-up.?

This means that a dancer, who often spends at least 10 minutes stretching at the bar before she starts to dance, might be sacrificing the power and intensity of her leaps and jumps, while setting herself up for injury. This is especially true if the dancer has overstretched hamstrings, which prevent her from bending her knees and absorbing the shock of the jump.

(AP) ? Judith Crist, a blunt and popular film critic for the "Today" show, TV Guide and the New York Herald Tribune whose reviews were at times so harsh that director Otto Preminger labeled her "Judas Crist," has died. She was 90.

Her son, Steven Crist, said his mother died Tuesday at her Manhattan home after a long illness.

Starting in 1963, at the Tribune, Crist wrote about and discussed thousands of movies for millions of readers and viewers, and also covered theater and books.

She was the first woman to become a full-time critic at a major U.S. newspaper and was among the first reviewers of her time to gain a national following. Roger Ebert credited her with helping to make all film critics better known, including such contemporaries as The New Yorker's Pauline Kael and Andrew Sarris of the Village Voice.

With the growing recognition of such foreign directors as Francois Truffaut and Federico Fellini, and the rise of such American filmmakers as Robert Altman and Martin Scorsese, the 1960s and 1970s were an inspiring time for reviewers. Crist duly celebrated many movies, but her trademark quickly became the putdown.

An early review was for "Spencer's Mountain," a sentimental family melodrama starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. Unmoved by a story that became the basis for the TV series "The Waltons," Crist denounced the film's "sheer prurience and perverted morality" and cracked that "it makes the nudie shows at the Rialto look like Walt Disney productions."

The critic really poured it on for "Cleopatra," the budget-busting historical epic that starred Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton and was overwhelmed by the actors' off-screen love affair. "At best a major disappointment, at worst an extravagant exercise in tedium," Crist called the film, dismissing Taylor as "an entirely physical creature, no depth of emotion apparent in her kohl-laden eyes, no modulation in her voice, which too often rises to fishwife levels."

Her conclusion: "The mountain of notoriety has produced a mouse."

Crist was occasionally banned from advance screenings, while studios and theaters would threaten to pull advertising. When her "Cleopatra" review brought her a prize from the New York Newspaper Women's Club, officials at 20th Century Fox, which released the movie, withdrew from the ceremony.

Preminger, whose "Hurry Sundown" she called the "worst film" she had seen in memory, referred to her as "Judas Crist." After she condemned Billy Wilder's cross-dressing classic "Some Like It Hot" for its "perverse" gags and "homosexual 'in' joke(s)," Wilder allegedly remarked that asking her to review your movie was like "asking the Boston strangler to massage your neck."

But Crist had many friends in the business, from Bette Davis to "Cleopatra" director Joseph Mankiewicz. She ran a film festival for decades out of suburban Tarrytown, N.Y., with guests including Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Steven Spielberg. Woody Allen liked her well enough to give her a cameo in his 1980 drama "Stardust Memories," widely believed to have been based in part on Crist's Tarrytown gatherings.

She was born in New York in 1922 and would say that Charlie Chaplin's silent masterpiece "The Gold Rush" was her first and most vivid film memory. By age 10, she had decided she wanted to be a reviewer; movies became her passion and her vice. She would cut classes for a chance to visit a theater or two, including a cherished day in which she took in showings of "Gone With the Wind," ''The Grapes of Wrath" and "Grand Illusion."

Her edge was likely formed by her Dickensian childhood. The daughter of a successful fur trader, she lived in Canada until age 9, attending private school, enjoying the luxuries of multiple homes, live-in servants and the family's bulletproof Cadillac. But in the 1930s, her father's business was ruined by the Great Depression.

"And then suddenly, our most gracious home was gone. The servants left," she wrote years later in Time magazine. "After we lost the last of our homes, we moved to New York to get some kind of assistance from my mother's family. Well, from both of my parents' families. We lived in a small, one-bedroom apartment while my father went out on the road, recouping things."

She still managed to attend Hunter College and receive a master's degree from Columbia University's journalism school. In 1945, soon after graduation, she was hired as a feature writer by the Herald Tribune, where she remained until the paper closed, in 1966, and where colleagues included Jimmy Breslin and Tom Wolfe. In 1950, her education reporting brought her a George Polk Award, and she was honored five times by the New York Newspaper Woman's Club.

Crist reviewed film and theater for the "Today" show from 1964-73, and as a print critic worked for New York magazine, TV Guide and the New York Post. She was a longtime adjunct professor at Columbia and her essays, interviews and reviews have been compiled into three books: "The Private Eye, The Cowboy and the Very Naked Girl," ''Judith Crist's TV Guide to the Movies" and "Take 22: Moviemakers on Moviemaking."

Crist's husband, public relations consultant William B. Crist, died in 1993. Their son, Steven Crist, covered horse racing for The New York Times and later became publisher of the Daily Racing Form.

According to Columbia, a private burial is planned, with a public memorial possible in September.
