I'm looking to make a fantasy RP however every time I see one made they always seem to be to medieval or to restricted. I'm not good at coming up with my own fantasy universe, I'm only good at creating the mythology for one. I was hoping for one that I could RP as my death knight in>inspired by D&D

java - Common network communications exceptions - Stack Overflow

I'm building a service bus for Android and I'd like to distinguish between hard exceptions and those due to network issues. Broken connection, etc. I was originally catching IOException, but that's obviously far too broad. Some of those will be real file system issues local to the device.

Right now I have SocketException and ProtocolException, although the latter may not qualify. Anything else you might expect in the normal course of mobile events?

Democratic platform focuses on fixing the economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats unveiled a party platform at their national convention Monday that echoes President Barack Obama's call for higher taxes on wealthier Americans while backing same-sex marriage and abortion rights.

Delegates will vote Tuesday to adopt the platform that reflects the president's argument that his work is unfinished and he deserves another four years to complete the job.

"Today, our economy is growing again, al-Qaeda is weaker than at any point since 9/11, and our manufacturing sector is growing for the first time in more than a decade. But there is more we need to do, and so we come together again to continue what we started," the platform said.

The document is a sharp contrast from the Republican blueprint that the GOP adopted at its convention last week. The Republican plan would ban abortion and gay marriage, repeal Obama's health care overhaul law and shift Medicare into a voucher-style program.

Democrats acknowledged that divergent views.

"This election is not simply a choice between two candidates or two political parties, but between two fundamentally different paths for our country and our families," the Democrats said.

TAXES

The Democratic platform calls for extending the middle-class tax cuts for the 98 percent of American families who make less than $250,000 a year, and makes a promise not to raise taxes on them. The platform claims a typical family has saved $3,600 during Obama's first term. "Now he's fighting to stop middle-class families and those aspiring to join the middle class from seeing their taxes go up and to extend key tax relief for working families and those paying for college, while asking the wealthiest and corporations to pay their fair share," the platform says.

The Republican platform would extend the Bush tax cuts of 2001 and 2003, pending reform of the tax code. It also says the party would try to eliminate taxes on interest, dividends and capital gains altogether for lower- and middle-income taxpayers. It also would work to repeal the estate tax and the alternative minimum tax.

ABORTION

The Democratic platform states that it "unequivocally" supports Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion legal, and "supports a woman's right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay."

The platform states: "Abortion is an intensely personal decision between a woman, her family, her doctor and her clergy; there is no place for politicians or government to get in the way."

The Republican Party platform bans abortion in all cases, even rape, incest and when the life of the mother is endangered. Republicans say "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed." It opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions.

GAY MARRIAGE

The Democratic platform supports the movement to get equal treatment under the law for same-sex couples.

The platform says: "We also support the freedom of churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference." The platform opposes "federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection under the law" to same-sex couples.

The Republican Party platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

IMMIGRATION

The platform states that "Democrats are strongly committed to enacting comprehensive immigration reform." Immigration overhaul would include bringing "undocumented immigrants out of the shadows," requiring illegal immigrants "to get right with the law, learn English and pay taxes" to get on a path toward citizenship. It also calls for a visa system that meets the country's "economic needs, keeps families together and enforces the law." It acknowledges that administrative fixes are not permanent. "Only Congress can provide a permanent, comprehensive solution."

The Republican platform opposes "any form of amnesty" for those who intentionally violate the immigration laws, demands a halt to Justice Department lawsuits against states that have enacted tough immigration measures, would deny federal funding to universities that provide in-state tuition to illegal immigrants and advocates making English the official national language.

MEDICARE

Democrats say the new health care law makes Medicare stronger by adding new benefits, fighting fraud and improving care for patients. It notes that nearly 50 million older Americans and those with disabilities rely on Medicare. Over 10 years, the law will save the average Medicare beneficiary $4,200, the platform says. "Democrats adamantly oppose any efforts to privatize or voucherize Medicare," the platform says.

The GOP platform pledges to move Medicare away from "the current unsustainable defined-benefit entitlement model to a fiscally sound defined-contribution model." It supports a Medicare transition to a premium-support model with an income-adjusted contribution toward a health plan of the enrollee's choice.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE

The Democratic platform criticizes the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision, which lifted restrictions on independent political expenditures by corporations and unions, and calls for "immediate action to curb the influence of lobbyists and special interests on our political institutions" ? with a constitutional amendment, if necessary, in the cause of campaign finance reform.

"We support requiring groups trying to influence elections to reveal their donors so the public will know who's funding the political ads it sees," the platform says.

The Republican platform supports the Citizens United decision as a free speech issue.

HEALTH CARE

The platform pledges to continue building on the new health care law. It says accessible, affordable, high-quality health care is part of the American promise, that Americans should have the security that comes with good health care, and that no one should go broke because they get sick. "No law is perfect and Democrats stand willing to work with anyone to improve the law where necessary, but we are committed to moving forward," the platform says.

The GOP platform says that a Republican president on his first day in office would use his waiver authority to halt progress in carrying out the health care act. It calls for a Republican plan based on improving health care quality and lowering costs and a system that promotes the free market and gives consumers more choice.

DEFENSE

The platform says Democrats have responsibly ended the war in Iraq, put the al-Qaida terrorist organization on the path to defeat with the killing of Osama bin Laden and reversed the Taliban's momentum to set the stage for the drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

"As a consequence of the president's decisions and the brave work of our military and intelligence professionals, bin Laden can no longer threaten the United States and al-Qaida's senior leadership has been devastated, rendering the group far less capable than it was four years ago," the platform said. "The al-Qaida core in Afghanistan and Pakistan has never been weaker."

Democrats back further reductions in the nuclear weapons stockpile, building on the hard-fought U.S.-Russia treaty that Obama got through the Senate in December 2010. Democrats also say they have an "unshakable commitment to Israel's security," and Obama will do all in his power to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

Democrats say they want to maintain a strong military, but argue that in the current fiscal environment, tough budgetary decisions must include defense spending. They noted that Democrats and Republicans agreed last summer in the deficit-cutting plan to reduce military spending.

Republicans, in their platform, criticizes the Obama administration as holding weak positions toward such countries as North Korea, China and Iran and for reductions in military spending.

Tarsha

Geography:
Tarsha is one of the biggest countries on the map. Located up North. It contains one major city, Iris along with a few small towns dotted throughout the area. There are two major Rivers running through Tarsha including The Tarsh River named after the country and the Ira (a smaller river) that was named after the major settlement. Both rivers are fresh water. There is also a boat harbour directly north of Iris called Nira. Nira is a bustling harbour that is surrounded by a small city. Tarsha contains a strong army and also navy.

History:
Tarsha has been in existance for as long as anyone can remember, and is said to be the most ancient countries, though this may be because of it's size and the way it seems to have it's voice heard over other cities. Tarsha's main neighbouring country is Syra. Syra and Tarsha used to be allies of trade. Syra provided the bulk of Tarsha's wood and pine industry. However after breaking up the treaty to supply a set amount of pine, the Tarshan Emperor broke off relations with the Syri people. Seeking revenge, the Tarshan Emperor ordered small raids on the settlements on the islands closest to Nira. Currently there has been no reaction from Syra, though there is rumour it is only a matter of time.
Tarsha is known as the largest country and is also the wealthiest. It is known for it's harsh ruling, wealthy districts and also it's fishing industry. As rich as it is, there are also many poor areas especially in the city regions, though the city tends to cover this up.

Customs:
Tarsha is known for it's religious views of the priests and people worshipping an unknown god. The priests have never enlightened the public of the names of the apparent god, however he is very much revered. The BloodOath ceremony is perhaps it's most well known custom. The major city, Iris, was also formed on the backs of slaves, and slave trading is well known in Tarsha. Slave traders are well thought of by the city and also heavily rewarded by the priests.
The market place is also a rich source of culture. It is filled with people bartering with the local coins, quan. Tarsha normally provides it's own fruit, vegetable and meat along with jewellery and wealthy products. The things imported include wood, delicacies from other lands and also woven goods.

Climate:
Tarsha is relatively humid. It has an average temperature of around 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius). The temperature rarely drops, however there are many accounts of summer rains within the higher temperatures. In Winter it does get a little cooler, however never snows and there has only been two accounts of hail.
The land is reasonably hilly, and quite sandy, though far from unfertile. The farming is good and there is a reasonably large mountain range to the East of Iris.

Syra:

Geography:
Syra has not got any permanent settlements. The natives are broken into different tribes that don't have a permanent home, they move around to different areas depending on their need.

History:
Syra was originally founded from Tarsha, many thousands of years ago. Since then they have developed their own customs and culture. They also have adapted to their environment. Since migrating from Tarsha, the people declared independence from the empire. Relations between the two countries at first was none existent, however after Tarshan spies saw the pine forest a treaty was formed two hundred years ago. Since then, the Syri have given a portion of the wood/pine they manufacture as well as woven goods. For a while this worked, but as the pine forests became rather depleted Syra had to break the treaty. The Emperor of Tarsha struck back, and attacked some of the Syri islands closest to Nira. So far there has been no reply from Syra...

Customs:
The Syri have a very tribal culture. They tend to live in small villages/tribes and move depending on the needs of the people. They live in small canvas tents and use animal skins to protect themselves from the cold. The Syri people worship a goddess, once again nameless. Rumour has it that this is due to their Tarshan roots.
Due to natural adaption, the Syri also have a distinct appearance. They are known for their dark black hair and extremely pale skin. In comparison to their ancestors, the Tarshan's, their skin is now white and extremely pale. One can easily point out a Syri from these distinguishing features.
The Syri also have numerous strange customs and rituals. One of the main ones being keeping small items from each family member to ensure seeing them in the after life. It is said that if the items are on the person when they die, they will see their family in the afterlife. As such, the Syri tend to tie such items to themselves under their clothing. This ritual is not shared with outsiders. It is also thought that if an item is lost or destroyed, the chances of seeing their family again is very slim. When a Syri dies, the articles are burnt along with the body along with a single phrase and gesture.

Climate:
The climate is freezing cold. The country is always under a soft blanket of snow and the few bodies of water have thick ice layers. In summer, the country simply gets brighter, but maintains the white covering. Most of Syra is made up of pine forests. They are famous for their wood industry. Deer, snow leopards, hares, white foxes and other mammals are found in the area and are the main food source. For the settlements near the coast, salmon can also be caught and eaten.

Pirate Bay co-founder detained in Cambodia

The co-founder of a controversial file-sharing website,?Pirate Bay's Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, has been detained in Cambodia after skipping out on a one-year prison sentence in Sweden, according to reports from Phnom Penh.

Svartholm?Warg was among four administrators of The Pirate Bay who were convicted in Swedish court in 2009 on charges of contributory copyright infringement.

The Pirate Bay was one of the world's highest-profile file-sharing sites, pointing millions of users to material elsewhere on the Web that in many cases was illegally pirated.

Svartholm?Warg and his fellow defendants argued that the website did not host pirated material itself, but merely helped users find BitTorrent files via a peer-to-peer network. The court didn't buy the argument. In addition to the jail terms, the four were ordered to pay millions of dollars in damages to entertainment companies including Sony Music Entertainment,?Warner Bros, EMI and Columbia Pictures.

The three other?defendants in the case -- including co-founders Peter Sunde and Fredrik Neij as well as financier Carl Lundstr?m -- had their one-year prison sentences reduced to terms of?four to 10 months during appeal. Svartholm?Warg, however,?didn't attend the appeal hearing, ostensibly due to illness. The Swedish government upheld his sentence, and when he failed to show up to serve the prison term, an international warrant was issued?for his arrest.

It was well-known in that Svartholm?Warg had sought refuge in Cambodia, and reports spread over the weekend that Cambodian?police had finally taken him into custody. The TorrentFreak website said he was arrested in an apartment over the Cadillac Bar and Grill, a popular hangout for expatriates in Phnom Penh.

One of Svartholm Warg's co-defendants, Peter Sunde, confirmed the report: ?"Gottfrid ... is in custody in Cambodia," he said in a Twitter update. "He's apparently OK. No more info available."

Cambodia's national police acknowledged to the AFP news service that Svartholm Warg was detained.

"His arrest was made at the request of the Swedish government for a crime related to information technology," police spokesman Kirth Chantharith told AFP today.?"We don't have an extradition treaty with Sweden, but we'll look into our laws and see how we can handle this case."

In a follow-up report, TorrentFreak suggested that Svartholm Warg had run into trouble with associates in Phnom Penh, and that he was likely to be sent back to Sweden. ?

The Census Bureau estimates that the number of people without health insurance improved slightly in most Arizona counties from 2008 to 2010, the latest year for which numbers are available.

WASHINGTON ? Almost one Arizonan in five was without health insurance in 2010, with the number rising to one in four in some of the state?s hardest-hit counties, according to a Census Bureau report.

The report said that Arizona?s overall uninsured rate for people under age 65 stood at 19.3 percent in 2010, slightly higher than the national average of 17.7 percent for the same year.

Texas was the worst state in the nation, with 26.3 percent of its population uninsured in 2010, while Massachusetts posted the best rate at 5.2 percent.

Tara Plese, a spokeswoman for Arizona Association of Community Health Centers, said the numbers are significant for Arizona, as they translate into a ?tremendous number? of patients seeking uncompensated medical attention.

?We are really seeing it in our health centers,? Plese said.

The bureau?s Small Area Health Insurance Estimates report, released Wednesday, said La Paz, Santa Cruz and Yuma counties were the worst-off in Arizona in 2010, the most recent year for which figures are available.

Justin Carmack, director of the Tri-Valley Medical Clinic in the La Paz County town of Salome, said patients without health coverage are a big problem.

?We see a lot of uninsured patients,? said Carmack. ?Most of them are the migrant farmworkers population.?

Carmack said the clinic offers a 30 percent discount on cash-based services like vaccines and check-ups, as well as an assistance program that lets uninsured patients pay in installments.

But, he said, ?We take the hit on the bottom line.?

The Census report, which provides estimates for every county in the nation, said 25.5 percent of La Paz County residents were uninsured in 2010, a number that has been steady since 2008.

The report includes almost any type of insurance ? whether Medicaid, private or employer-based ? when determining who is covered and who is not. The only type of healthcare that is excluded in the report is Indian Health Service coverage.

Wes Basel, the Census Bureau team lead for the SAHIE project, said the exclusion of IHS coverage could help explain the higher rates of uninsured people in those parts of the country with large numbers of American Indians.

Overall, the percentage of Arizonans with health insurance had improved ? but only slightly ? from 2008 to 2010, according to the report.

?Some of those numbers may have increased because 2008 was the heart of the recession,? said Monica Coury, spokeswoman for Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System, the state?s Medicaid system.

As the economy and job market improved, it might have contributed to a slight rise in the number of people who had health insurance. But in general, Coury said, ?Arizona?s uninsured rates have been fairly steady.?

But even having a job is no guarantee of coverage. Plese said in many cases, employers cannot afford to provide insurance to workers.

?Small businesses are not able to afford health insurance because of the cost of covering their employees,? Plese said.

While La Paz, Santa Cruz and Yuma had the highest percentage of uninsured people in 2010, the report said Greenlee, Cochise and Pima counties had the lowest rates of uninsured that year. Greenlee County was the lowest in Arizona, with 15.1 percent uninsured in 2010.
